Taddy-Tad tadpole

Grace brought a tadpole home from her wildlife summer camp back in mid-July. We keep it in a bucket and feed it fish food. We've been watching it daily to look for changes. It has a long tail and small hind legs. I took this picture on Aug 18. It looks mostly the same as the day we brought it home.

Just a couple days later we noticed tiny nubby arms sticking out, and the tail was a bit shorter. Then two days later those nubs were real front legs, and the tail was significantly shortened:

That same night, Aug 22, the "froglet" tried climbing out of the bucket! Apparently it has fully developed lungs now and is ready to get moving!

And just look at it now!!!
Ok, just kidding. We decided we should release the froglet. On the way home from the pond, we caught this large toad, as big as your hand. It seemed like a GIANT after trying to see the tiny detail of the tadpole for several weeks.

What an exciting night of amphibians!
